Information about Spam
This is the abuse of electronic messaging systems (such as email) to send unsolicited bulk messages.
Due the widespread nature of spam in today's online society, most email providers have put in place systems to detect SPAM and filter them out from genuine emails. As the systems become more sophisticated, the spammers also become more sophisticated in their quest to circumvent these systems. This is the reason why you will also receive some spam to your inbox.
As a result of these systems, it is unfortunate the some genuine email will be detected as spam and therefore end up in your spam folder. In the trade this is call a ‘false positive’.
Email providers handle spam in different ways. If you log on to a webmail account such as Google Mail, Yahoo, Hotmail etc, these will have a separate spam folder which hold all the spam. They usually remove any old items after a period such as 30 days.
If you download your email to email software such as Outlook, you may find that your email provider (usually your Internet Service Provider (ISP)) is configured to filter out the spam and doesn’t let it download. In these situations you will probably be able to log into your email account through a web browser to view the spam. Others will mark spam in some way for you to identify it as such. Most software also has its own spam filtering systems, but they are nowhere near as sophisticated as the ones used by email providers. If you have this enabled on your software, you may find a lot more genuine email ends up in a spam folder, also known as ‘Junk Mail’
If you still are unsure, please ask the person who set up your PC or a friend to help.
So, the main message is, if you are expecting an email and have not received it, CHECK YOUR SPAM!
